Western Brook Pond

Today started out warm and sunny. We were excited that the day we chose to take a boat trip was so good! We started out in the car and enjoyed the ride and then the hike into the beginning of the boat tour. As you can see from the photos it was indeed sunny but no sooner did we begin our cruise of Western Brook Pond then it clouded over and then ¾ of the way through it poured! I guess that is a sunny day in Newfoundland…
Gros Morne is full of hiking trails – some easy and some very difficult. We will try some of the easy-moderate ones. We learned about the formation of the fiord-like area of Western Brook Pond. It is the result of the earth’s plates colliding glaciers melting and finally the bog that formed under the ice rising and closing off the entrance to the sea. So the fiord now has no entrance to the ocean and has become fresh water. The water is not rich in nutrients so algae doesn’t grow there and there are just a limited amount of animal life that makes it their home. Tonight we are going to see Anchors Aweigh, a very popular show at a local pub. We’ll let you know all about it tomorrow.
